Climate and country information

South Korea

Climate

South Korea has four distinct seasons. Spring and autumn or fall have clear and mild weather, summer is very hot and humid, and winter has a cold and arid climate. Although the temperatures do not differ much among regions, the southern areas including Busan tend to be warmer. Late June to mid-July is considered monsoon season with daily showers.

Optional activities

The following excursions and/or activities are usually available and may be arranged locally. Estimated costs are provided below for guidance only, are on a per person basis unless shown otherwise, and may depend on the number of participants. Prices quoted are correct as of the date these tour notes were originally issued but may change at any time due to currency fluctuations. Please note: These activities are booked and paid for locally and do not form part of your Explore holiday contract.

Costs vary according to numbers of clients participating. The Tour Leader will need to confirm numbers for the Busan optional cookery and rice wine making excursions on Day 1 or first thing on Day 2 and take payment in Korean Won in order to secure our booking. Please note that these may be fully booked in peak season and unavailable.

Busan
Morning cooking class with lunch included - minimum 4 clients - 152 USD per person (approx 210,000 Won)
Makgeolli brewing experience with lunch included - minimum 5 clients - 72 to 85 USD per person (approx 100 to 120,000 Won)

Clothing

Lightweight raingear is required all year round. Summers are hot and humid in South Korea and the winters are cold. For Spring and Autumn you should be prepared for hot and cold conditions. For winter departures warm sweaters, gloves, scarf, hat, warm coat and thermal underwear will be required. In South Korea it is important to dress modestly, especially if you are visiting a temple of other religious site. This means avoiding clothing that is too revealing or tight.

Please note that for the DMZ visit there are some strict rules around clothing and behaviour. You Tour Leader will remind you but closed-toe shoes are mandatory and sandals, flip-flops etc are prohibited and in general you should be dressed conservatively and neatly, avoiding any clothing that is ripped, torn or excessively worn.

Footwear

A lot of the sightseeing and city tours are conducted on foot so it is important to have some comfortable shoes. Much of the terrain in Korea is hilly or uneven, even in metropolitan areas like Busan and Seoul. You often need to take off your shoes when you step inside a religious building or get invited into a home. Walking shoes or shoes that you are comfortable walking in are recommended for the Namsan hike on day 5.

Luggage

20Kg

Luggage: On tour

Please bring a suitcase or soft holdall and rucksack for the day trips. If you plan to travel with more than one main suitcase please contact us so we can advise the local suppliers before travel. Please note that in the event there is not enough room on the main vehicle to transport extra luggage you will be required to pay for storage in Seoul and the Tour Leader will be able to help advise you on this.

Equipment

We recommend getting an e-SIM for your smart phone to allow for navigation in the cities, translation etc. This can be arranged prior to travel or on arrival at the airport. Alternatively speak with your Tour Leader for other options in Seoul.

You will find that Google Maps does not work in Korea. You should download either Naver Maps or Kakaomap, which are two locally developed Apps that will work in South Korea.

Please note that power banks with lithium batteries must be packed in your hand luggage. Any that are over 160Wh will be confiscated, and you are permitted to fly with a limit of two between 100 and 160Wh.

Tipping

Explore leader
Tipping isn't compulsory, and we work hard to ensure that our leaders all receive a fair wage. You may however, want to recognise a leader that's done a great job or really added to your trip by giving them a tip. We're often asked about the recommended amount. It's a tricky one, and down to personal preference, but we'd recommend £40 per person as a guideline.

Local crew
Although entirely voluntary, tipping is a recognised part of life in this region of the world. Some local staff will look to members of the group for personal recognition of particular services provided. Accordingly, you should allow £20 for tipping.

In order to make things easier for you, the Tour Leaders may organise a group's tips kitty and if this is the case, they will account for it throughout the tour. Please note that hotel staff will not be included in this tips kitty and that it is not generally expected to tip in restaurants. It is also not expected to tip the guide and driver for the DMZ excursion. Therefore this tip is for the drivers.

Accommodation notes

In Gyeongju accommodation is spread across a large area and there isn't really a defined central or downtown area. We have chosen the large and comfortable Lahan Select Gyeongju hotel. This four star property has spacious rooms with a balcony and fully fitted bathrooms with shower and bath. Facilities include a bowling alley, cafe, small shop and swimming pool (available for residents at an additional cost). There is a main large buffet restaurant downstairs and a food court style eatery on the ground floor with four different small restaurants (payment only by card through the machine where you order the food). Located on Lake Bosun there is a footpath around the lake, lit at night, that is perfect for a stroll or jog. There are convenience stores and a local restaurant within a few minutes walk of the hotel.

Busan is a large, busy city spread along the various beachfronts, bays and headlands. The Fairfield by Marriott Songdo Beach is located on a relatively quiet and sheltered bay on the west side of town, perfect for swimming. Facilities include a convenience store, restaurant and a viewing platform. The name Songdo refers to the pine forests that were once prevalent in the area and established in 1913 this was the first public beach in Korea. There is convenient access to the Songdo Skywalk - a raised walkway offering panoramic views - and the Songdo Marine Cable Car.

The Holiday Inn Gwangju is a simple hotel located on the outskirts of town. While there are restaurant options within walking distance, we recommend getting a taxi into town if you want to try some of the local specialties.

The Best Western Plus Jeonju is a comfortable hotel located in the modern part of town. Please note that at busy times there can be a wait for the lift, but there is a stairwell as well.

Food and drink

Food in South Korea is of paramount importance culturally and is often a highlight for those visitors interested in different cuisines.

It should be easier for vegetarians and vegans to find options in big cities like Seoul and Busan. In smaller and less visited destinations, finding vegan options can be difficult and limited in choice.

Unfortunately, we can't always cater to food allergies. If you have a severe allergy, you must inform us at the time of booking. Even with advance notice, we can't guarantee an allergy-free setting as there is always the risk of cross-contamination in kitchens or at buffet settings in hotels and restaurants.

South Korean food uses gluten (common ingredient in Korean dishes), nuts and nut oil, sesame (oil and seeds), soya products (soy sauce, tofu and bean paste), seaweed (common ingredient), seafood products and egg (amongst other allergens) extensively, and it's incredibly difficult to avoid these ingredients. Many restaurants in the region are also unfamiliar with some allergies that are common in the West and can be reluctant or unable to cater to them.

South Korea

Food and drink

Can you drink the water?
It is generally possible to drink the local tap water, therefore to reduce the need for single-use plastic bottles we recommend you bring a refillable water bottle with you. Your leader will advise you on refill points each day. All hotels and restaurants will have water dispensers.
