Itinerary

Day 1 - Join trip in the lakeside town of Koycegiz

The trip starts at the tranquil lakeside town of Koycegiz, which takes its name from the nearby lake. Away from the tourist trail and surrounded by natural beauty, Koycegiz is a favourite for locals in the know!

For those arriving in time, our tour leader will meet you in the hotel reception at 7pm for the initial tour briefing. Afterwards, there'll be the option to have dinner at a nearby restaurant. Should you miss the welcome meeting, our tour leader will inform you of any essential information as soon as you catch up. The main trip briefing will normally take place on the morning of day 2 due to some late flight arrivals. If you'd like an airport transfer today, you'll need to arrive at Dalaman International Airport (DLM), a 45 minute drive from our hotel.

If your flight arrives earlier in the day, you might like to take a stroll along the promenade and visit one of the lakeside cafes and restaurants. Our hotel for the first two nights is situated on the lake shore with an expansive terrace and infinity pool and very close to all the towns amenities.

Accommodation:

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Swimming pool available

Meals Provided: None

Day 2 - Full day in Koycegiz, boat trip to Sultaniye springs and evening BBQ on the lake

This morning, we'll enjoy our first taste of a traditional Turkish breakfast, typically featuring yogurt, cheeses, fresh breads, cucumbers, tomatoes, olives, and seasonal fruits. After a leisurely breakfast, we'll set out with our tour leader for an orientation walk through the town, ending with a stroll down to the lakefront beach for a dip.

In the afternoon, we'll take to the water for a boat trip across the lake to the Sultaniye springs, visiting the mud baths. Used by locals for centuries, the mineral-rich mud is said to cleanse and tighten the skin, while the naturally hot sulphur springs are believed to hold soothing and healing properties. After our visit to the springs, we'll return to Koycegiz by boat, enjoying a BBQ dinner onboard along the way.

Accommodation:

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Swimming pool available

Meals Provided: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 3 - Boat ride to Caunos ancient site and Iztuzu beach, visit a turtle conservation centre, continue to Saklikent canyon

After breakfast we drive the short distance to the coastal town of Dalyan, where we board a boat and head out onto the gentle waters of the Dalyan River, looking out for several species of turtles amongst the reeds.

Our first stop is the ancient city of Caunos, which dates back to 400 BC. The site has amazing tombs carved out of the sheer rock cliffs, a theatre that seats 5,000 spectators as well as six temples and the remains of its Roman baths - we'll have time to explore this amazing site steeped in history. The Temple of Zeus and the Roman baths also give us a great photo opportunity, backed by the lush valley.

We'll continue downstream along the river in the boat to Iztuzu beach, a 4.5 kilometer / 2.7 mile sandy beach. This beach is also a nesting ground for the beautiful loggerhead turtle. We recommend packing your swimming costume and a towel today as there'll be the opportunity to take a dip in the turquoise waters. The shallow water off the beach is perfect for swimming.

Later in the day we'll take a short 4 kilometer / 2.5 mile hike along the beach to visit the Turtle Conservation Centre (DEKAMER). The conservation centre works to protect the turtle nesting areas on Iztuzu Beach, cares for and rehabilitates injured turtles and attempts to educate the local boatman on the importance of using propeller guards.

Our final destination tonight is Saklikent Canyon (just under a two-hour drive away) where we stay in a characterful property offering tree house and chalet bungalow accommodation.

Accommodation:

Grade: Simple Tree-House

Meals Provided: Breakfast

Day 4 - Walk in Saklikent Gorge and river tubing. Visit the ancient city of Tlos, homestead village lunch

Saklikent Gorge is the second-longest gorge in Europe, and we'll spend an hour or so walking in the 300-metre high canyon. After exiting the gorge, we'll try our hand at river tubing. We'll be given a paddle, a tube and safety equipment before setting off, spinning and twisting our way downstream.

Our next destination is the ancient city of Tlos, around 30 minutes away. The site is still being excavated but it's possible to go inside the rock-carved Lycian tombs - we sometimes find that we have the whole place to ourselves! We'll climb the citadel and take in the views of the entire Xanthos Valley and the 3,000 metre /10,000 foot Mount Akdag, the giant of Lycia. It was believed that Bellepheron, rider of Pegasus the flying horse, was a local of Tlos. We'll hear the legends associated with him near the tomb that's believed to be his.

After our dose of archaeology, we continue in the vehicle for 22 kilometres / 13 miles (35 minutes) uphill through the remote apple producing mountain villages to visit a family for lunch in Yayla Palamut village. We'll be treated to thin pastry filled with cheese and herbs, salad and \ Ayran\ - the fortifying yoghurt drink beloved by most Turks.

After lunch, we'll take a relaxed 4-kilometre/2.5-mile walk in the pine forest before meeting the bus near a bridge on the Karaçay stream - he same stream that you were tubing on earlier in the day. From here, we'll journey on to the village of Sutlegen (16 kilometres / 10 miles, a 25-minute drive) where we'll spend the night with a local family.

Tonight, we'll stay in a traditional simple village house. Accommodation will be in a combination of twin and multi share en-suite rooms of families of up to four people. We will also set up tents in the garden, depending on the size of the group, you may need to camp for this one night. Sutlegen is a typical rural Turkish village and the food and hospitality you'll experience is the perfect way to end a busy day of activities.

Accommodation:

Grade: Simple Village House

Meals Provided: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5 - Visit Patara Beach and trek in the foothills of the scenic Taurus Mountains

This morning starts with an optional visit to the local mosque followed by a trip to the village bakery to pick up some freshly baked bread.

Following a healthy breakfast at our guesthouse, we'll bid farewell to our hosts and continue to the start of our trek at Oluklar Meadows (a 25-minute drive). We'll trek near the summit of Mt. Bozkaya (2,100 metres/7,000 feet) observing the ancient Lebanese Cedars, some of which are over 2,000 years old. Descending through a series of valleys, we might be lucky enough to see the wild horses that live in this remote spot, before descending into the Kuruova valley, where our vehicle waits for us. Our trek covers 9 kilometres/ 5.6 miles, with 300 metres/985 feet of ascent and 660 metres/2,165 feet of descent. The paths are rocky in places but are stable underfoot, the trek takes around three to four hours with stops along the way.

Next we drive to Patara, just over an hour away. After settling into the hotel and enjoying some time by the pool, we'll stroll through olive groves into the magnificent ancient city of Patara, the Roman capital of the area, then over the sand dunes to the 16-kilometre/10-mile stretch of untouched sand that is Patara beach. We'll end the day with a sunset swim.

Accommodation:

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Swimming pool available

Meals Provided: Breakfast

Day 6 - Free day in Patara with optional sea kayaking trip over sunken ruins or spend the day in Kas

Today is free to explore at your own pace or spend the day relaxing at the hotel or on the beach.

For those that wish to, there is the option to try sea kayaking in the protected waters of Kekova. En-route, we'll have a packed breakfast of sandwiches and enjoy a paddle in the waters before they become busy with boats and kayakers. It's one of the most scenic areas of Lycia with picturesque islands, bays and small ancient cities surrounding the famous sunken Kekova. Through the crystal-clear water, you can spot streets and buildings below you that have been submerged by earthquakes.

Later, we'll paddle to the whitewashed village of Simena, whose harbour is dotted with ancient tombs and Roman baths. A rock-carved castle clings to the hillside, giving expansive views of the beautiful surroundings. After a visit to the ancient theatre, we'll take to the waters once again, paddling back to Ucagiz, where our transfer will be waiting to take us back to Patara.

Other options would be to visit the charming seaside town of Kas and visit the Greek island of Castelorizzo. Please see the budgeting section for full details.

Accommodation:

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Day 7 - Visit ancient Xanthos and canoe to Patara Beach

This morning starts with a visit to Xanthos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was the capital of ancient Lycia. We'll explore the city, which is brimming with influences from the Persians and Romans, before taking to the water for a canoeing trip down the Xanthos River through the reeds to Patara beach. The kayaking is suitable for beginners, no previous experience is needed.

Passing through the tranquil and unspoiled rural backwaters, those with a keen eye might be able to spot colourful kingfishers, egrets, grey and squacco herons and terrapins on the riverbanks.

We'll find a spot on the banks for a picnic lunch before continuing to the beach at Patara, where there'll be time to relax and swim.

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Climate and country information

Turkey

Climate

April, May, late-September and October are generally pleasantly warm, with temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees centigrade. Summers, June through to mid-September can be very hot with temperatures reaching mid-thirties or above. On especially hot days we try to avoid the heat as best we can with earlier starts. In late-October, November and March shoulder seasons, temperatures are cooler with an increased chance of rain. Despite these cooler temperatures it can be a perfect time to visit Turkey's amazing ancient sites and Istanbul as visitor numbers are lower. In winter you can expect cold weather and more rainfall. Temperatures inland on the Anatolian Plateau, in places such as Cappadocia, are always cooler than the coast thanks to the altitude up to 1000masl; and as a result temperatures are slightly cooler in the heart of summer and it isn't unusual to get snow in winter and cold days in shoulder seasons.

Optional activities

The following excursions and/or activities are usually available and may be arranged locally. Estimated costs are provided below for guidance only, are on a per person basis unless shown otherwise, and may depend on the number of participants. Prices quoted are correct as of the date these tour notes were originally issued but may change at any time due to currency fluctuations. Please note: These activities are booked and paid for locally and do not form part of your Explore holiday contract.

A selection of optional activities are listed below to help you budget for your Family adventure. Whilst the basic tour price you pay before you travel includes a great selection of highlights, we have also built in free time to allow you the flexibility to choose from a carefully selected range of additional excursions and activities or take time to relax, the choice is yours. At certain destinations along the way there may be several options to choose from and it may not be possible to fit all the activities in; your Explore Leader will be able to give advice on which are the most suitable for your family.

Day 6 optional activities:
Full day sea kayaking over sunken ruins to Kekova Island and visit Simena Castle. The cost decreases the more people sign up for this. 2 people £152, 3 people £109, 4 people £99, 5 people £84, 6 people £74, 7 people £67, 8 people £66. Prices are per person and include transport.

Full day boat trip to Greek Meis island (also known as Castelorizzo Island) £30 per adult and £25 per child (12 and under). Children aged 13 (and over) pay the adult rate. The boat leaves from Kas, 30 minutes drive away. Depending on numbers this journey can be done by public bus or a private transfer can be arranged by the Tour Leader who can give more details on the cost locally.

Day trip to Kas by local bus. Your Tour Leader can provide instructions and details of timings and costs. A bus ticket costs around £6 return.

Scuba diving in Kas from £42 to £84 depending on number of dives; experienced divers should bring certification and log book; intro dives are available for those without previous experience.

Note on travelling to the Greek Islands: If traveling with only one parent or guardian, children may need a written consent form from the non-travelling parent(s) or guardian(s). This consent is often required to be notarized or officially certified.

Clothing

The long Turkish summer can be hot, though much of the Mediterranean coastline is freshened by sea breezes. A warmer sweater is recommended for the evenings in early or late season. On the canoeing and sea-kayaking excursions in particular there is no shelter from the sun, so a sunhat is essential.
March / April and late September / October / November tend to be cooler so bring layers and some warmer clothes. A light rainjacket may also be useful.

Footwear

Trainers or walking boots for walks, plus sandals to wear in the river tubing and canyon walk, these will get wet!

Luggage: On tour

One main piece of baggage and daypack. Remember you are expected to carry your own luggage so
don't overload yourself.

Tipping

Explore leader
Tipping isn't compulsory, and we work hard to ensure that our leaders all receive a fair wage. You may however, want to recognise a leader that has done a great job or really added to your trip by giving them a tip. We're often asked about the recommended amount. It is a tricky one, and down to personal preference, but we would recommend £20 to £25 per family member as a guideline.
Local crew
Although voluntary, tipping is a recognised part of life in this region of the world. Some local staff will look to members of the group for personal recognition of particular services provided. Accordingly, you should allow approximately £20 of local currency per family member.
In order to make things easier for you, the Explore Leader may organise a group's tips kitty and if this is the case, they will account for it throughout the trip.

For all non-included services and meals on your trip please tip independently at your discretion.

Accommodation notes

Koycegiz: On the lakeside town of Koycegiz, we stay at a 3-star hotel situated right on the edge of the lake. The rooms offer a minibar, en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, a hair dryer and a TV. Most rooms also feature a balcony. There is a garden area and an expansive terrace with great views out to the lake. The hotel also features an in house restaurant and an infinity pool. It's a short walk to the restaurants and lakeside bars of Koycegiz.

Saklikent gorge: Our base for the one night we spend at Saklikent gorge is the characterful but simple Gorge Club. The property is spread out amongst mature pine trees at the canyon mouth, right beside the river, and features a combination of treehouses and simple bungalow-style chalets. The treehouses are simply furnished with a combination of single and double beds but not much else. Each family would have their own treehouse. Shared bathrooms are located close by. The lowest treehouse is around three meters above the ground, others are higher. The simple, compact bungalow style chalets have en-suite bathrooms and a double and single bed. Rooms will be allocated by our tour leader on arrival - if you have a strong preference please let them know on arrival and we'll do our very best to accommodate your request. The property has an in house café and restaurant and bar, there is good Wi-Fi at the restaurant area, but may not cover all the rooms.

Sutlegen village house: Our stay in Sutlegen is with a local family. There are six rooms in total at the village house, in a variety of configurations from double to multi-share. These will be allocated by the Tour Leader depending on the make-up of each family. There is also the possibility, depending on the group size, that we will set up additional tents in the garden, so please be prepared to potentially camp for this night! While the accommodation is no-frills, the warmth of the hosts' traditional hospitality and their delicious homemade cooking make this one night stay a welcome addition to the trip. There is no Wi-Fi tonight.

Patara: For the last three nights in Patara we've selected a small family run 3-star hotel located conveniently in the village with lovely views across the valley. The hotel offers Wi-Fi, an excellent seasonal pool and terrace bar. The hotel produces a lot of its food in their own garden including all the jams served at breakfast. The hotel is close to restaurants and bars, and is a 30 minute walk to the splendid beach.

Turkey

Food and drink

Can you drink the water?
It is generally possible to drink the local tap water, therefore to reduce the need for single-use plastic bottles we recommend you bring a refillable water bottle with you. Your leader will advise you on refill points each day.
