Not the best organised Explore trip I've been on, but nevertheless I liked Romania and was glad to visit. The Transylvanian countryside is beautiful and I enjoyed all three castles, which are different but beautiful in their own ways. The bear watching is very disappointing. My low score below is based on the poor organisation of the trip rather than the destination, which is great. It was our leader's first trip with a large group and at times his inexperience showed. The group's size was too large for the way the trip was designed which wasn't his fault and didn't help. There was little freedom and we had quite a battle to be 'allowed' to spend a free evening in Bran rather than getting drunk in a restaurant. The leader was desperate for the group to always all do the same thing even when there was no organised activity. This was probably due to lack of familiarity with how Explore usually do things. We were constantly told we 'weren't allowed' by Explore to spend our free time independently which those of us who've travelled with Explore for years knew wasn't right.

We’re sorry to hear that you were a little disappointed with your tour leader, especially as you felt he was unorganised. Marian was new to the tour and finding his feet regarding free time and allowing you the opportunity to explore on their own, but I’m sorry this impacted your overall experience.  As food cannot be consumed in the hide it can be some time between meals and this should have also been advised by the Tour Leader. We have addressed your points with our local agent and Marian directly

Our guide Oana made this trip an absolute pleasure. Although very young, she was knowledgeable, fun and caring of the entire group's needs. Nothing was too much trouble and she was very organised. The guest house owner was very attentive and great fun, and the driver very careful and charming. The itinerary was well thought out and busy without being totally exhausting. We visited Rasnov Citadelle because one of the castles was closed while we were there. It was fabulous and well worth a visit. Don't just go for the bear watching......treat that as a bonus. The Bears only arrived as it was getting dark and at the last possible moment for viewing

Romania was a very pleasant surprise, it's a country that is very misunderstood. The scenery and sites were amazing, I'd recommend the Pelisor palace for it's unique and startling collection of Arts Nouveaux. Brassov medieval town is simply stunning. There isn't enough money to get to all the antiquities and buildings they want to show off. Visit before the character of the place changes.Extremely experienced, knowledgeable and showed empathy for the group regarding pace and content. Very open about the impacts of recent history from a personal point of view. Clearly used to modifying plans for site closures.

A really good mix of cultural highlights and nature. The Transylvanian castles and fortified towns and churches attest to its turbulent past but the people there are open and friendly. The bear watching was the big highlight but prepare to be persistent. We saw nothing on the first day but when we returned for a second night we were rewarded by six turning up at our hide.

It was great to see the bears (and some very brave foxes), although we were further away then I expected to be. This was a nice paced trip, you felt like you got a lot fit into the time, but with three nights spent in a lovely guest house the evenings felt relaxing without the constant packing and unpacking you get on some trips where you are constantly moving between hotels. But do be prepared for rain and some disorganization at some of the castles/sights.

Bear watching was amazing. We didn't see them on the planned evening due to low mist so paid for a 2nd optional excursion and saw several very clearly.
