Good itinerary but could be better according to the Leader. Explore changed mode of transport from small plane over the Belize reef to enclosed speed boat with no explanation. This resulted in delays, extra costs and reduced time at the next site.

We’re sorry to hear that you were disappointed in the change of transport to Caye Caulker. This was amended last year due to flight availability concerns. Although we updated our Trip Notes to reflect the change, we’re aware that all of the information didn’t pull through to all of your documents correctly. We have now made corrections to our reservation system which holds these details, so there won’t be a repeat occurrence. In addition, our Product Manager for the area is considering your feedback about how the amended journey impacted your visit to Tulum. Thank you for taking the time to share your comments with us.

Milton Keynes
The tour leader, Ana, was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about her subject and her country. It's disappointing that her extensive local knowledge of alternative sites wasn't valued and taken on board by tour managers when planning routes. She was organised, always cheerful and ever the professional. Our drivers and buses were of a high standard.

The accommodation was generally acceptable, just. Advice to take a kettle if you wanted a hot drink in your room would have been helpful. Kettles were never provided.

For some obscure reason, breakfasts were not included on this trip (with the exception of one). This was impractical as it meant group members wandered off in search of food and made early morning starts difficult.

Great variety of ancient sites, but expect long journeys in between. Highlights - Palenque, Tikal, Chichen Itza and Uxmal. Good beach break at Caye Caulker.

Climbing the numerous pyramids was a high point of the trip. Can be difficult to change US dollars in Mexico City when you arrive at the weekend. Much easier to find an ATM and extract local currency from machine than finding a bank or exchange shop. Breakfasts not included, unlike most other Explore trips so need to budget accordingly.

The last two sites in the Yucatan Peninsula were the highlight and should not be missed. Uxmal was the overall best.
Accommodation was usual Explore and the lack of provided breakfast led to problems in the hotel Fontan in Mexico City.
Itinery was busy and we covered 2400km in 3 weeks.
Be prepared for long days, early starts and Mexican food.

There were many highlights. The ancient sites were all different, but probably Teotihuacan, Monte Alban, Palenque, Tikal and Uxmal stood out; although others such as Yakchillan and Tonina were very atmospheric; the trip down the Sumidero gorge; the colonial towns of Oaxaca and San Cristobal were fascinating and the days on Caye Caulker were very relaxing.Ana was outstanding. Her passion and knowledge of mesoamerican history were inspiring. She was organised, adaptable and efficient. She made sure all members of the group got what they needed and wanted from the trip. She also had a great sense of fun and a great sense of humour.

The archaeological sites of Mont Alban outside Oaxaca and Uxmal with it's oval pyramid and incredible carvings on so many of the building were my highlights. There were however some very long coach journeys and we wondered about the possibility of at least one flight, particularly from Mexico City to Oaxaca.
