Gave a very good impression of Belarus. The country was much more colourful, modern, scenic, and well looked after than expected - no litter, clean and flowers everywhere. People generally friendly and helpful, especially in dealing honestly with all the zeros on currency. Highlights - Berezinsky National Park and walking in the forest and to the raised bog. Villages (and edges of towns) with multi coloured, quaint wooden houses in gardens, Khatin villages war memorial. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic local guides.

A real surprise given the only publicity it gets is as a bad communist dictatorship - and I found what was probably the cleanest and least graffiti filled place I've been to. There were few signs of the mafia excess and bling you see in other ex-communist states. The shops were full of all kinds of quality goods and for a foreigner it was very cheap - including in restaurants where the food was excellent especially if you like the local cuisine of potato pancakes and dumplings covered with sour cream - not a place to be on a diet. The old days of bad Soviet food seem long gone. Although there were many tower blocks for people to live in they were in far better condition than those I've seen in places like Romania and there were many old fashioned wooded house which were beautifully kept. There was plenty to see if you like grand Soviet style architecture; well restored churches and castles; very touching war memorials and excellent nature reserves. The people were polite though not a lot of English was spoken. The only problem with the trip was that it was too short and we had to run through some cities such as Vitebsk and Minsk quickly when you could quite easily have spend at least a couple of days there with plenty to see and do. The hotels were all of reasonable/good standard with all mod-cons.

An excellent introduction to a country which very few people know anything about - myself included! I previously thought that Belarus was in a time warp, and whilst life in rural areas appeared to be largely unchanged, its towns and cities (especially Minsk) are much more modern than expected. Its ties with Russia are very apparent, but we were given a warm welcome by everyone.

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

If going at the beginning of the season take plenty of mozzy repellent/anti mosquito clothing as the forest is full of them. Don't expect to spend a lot of money - 200 euros is more than enough for Belarus with a few zlotys extra for Warsaw.

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

Don't go with any preconceptions. This is not a backward country and parts are surprisingly beautiful.
