How high is Mount Toubkal?
The summit of Mount Toubkal is 4,167 metres above sea level. It is the highest mountain in
Morocco, the tallest point of the
Atlas Mountains.
When is the best time to climb Toubkal?
For a trekking summit, take on Toubkal between May to October before the thick winter snow falls. July and August are very hot in Morocco, but it gets cooler as you head up the valleys of the High Atlas Mountains, especially the further you ascend. The weather is mostly dry, with very little rainfall and clear blue skies, but clouds of mist can roll in over the mountains as you gain altitude. Please be aware that there may be snow on the summit particularly at the beginning (April-May) and end (October) of the season.
What is the best route up Mount Toubkal?
Toubkal is a surprisingly accessible mountain, and can be climbed in a long weekend with just a couple of days’ walking. Most walkers start their ascent from Imlil village in the Atlas mountains, and cross the river to zigzag up towards the base of the mountain to spend the night before summiting the next day.
The best time to summit Toubkal is the early morning – starting in the dark, illuminated by stars and headtorches, and watching the sun rise over the valley as you climb, slowly revealing the stunning views of the dusky pink hued High Atlas mountain range all around. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Sahara desert.
What is Mount Toubkal’s difficulty?
We rate Mount Toubkal as
moderate and challenging. You’ll be on your feet for around 6 hours each day trekking, and covering an ascent and descent of 960 metres in one day. The ground is uneven and can be hard on the knees. But the astounding panoramic views at the summit make this all worthwhile.
Where will I sleep?
You'll camp each night of the trek, in tents that are provided and pitched for you by the porters. We provide two-person tents so you'll share with another person of the same sex, or you can pay an additional cost for our single room option and get a tent to yourself (and your own hotel room pre- and post-trek).
What will I eat on Mount Toubkal Trek?
Our hard-working trekking support team cooks up delicious freshly-prepared meals to replenish your energy reserves and refuel you for the next leg, including a very hearty breakfast on summit day. Tuck into juicy fruit and crisp salads, boiled eggs and cous cous, as well as nuts and dates throughout the day. If you want extra supplies, snacks are available to buy along the route.
What if my Mount Toubkal trek happens during Ramadan?
Morocco is a Muslim country, and most locals observe Ramadan. Depending on your departure date you might find there are small changes to the itinerary - if this is the case, it will be noted on your trip notes. Some restaurants in Marrakech may be closed during the day but on trek your meals will be served as normal. .
