Ghana highlights

From wildlife to local life, Ghana makes for a unique holiday destination. Whether you want to visit bustling markets or learn about the country’s vast history, there are countless ways to enjoy an adventure holiday to Ghana with us.

Here are a few more highlights to enjoy on our Best of Ghana trip:

1. Local communities

Kejetia Market, in Kumasi, is one of the largest markets in West Africa. Visit this well-known market on our Best of Ghana tour and browse over 11,000 stalls selling all manner of items, from food and clothing to jewellery and bric-a-brac.

2. Wildlife

Located in northern Ghana, Mole National Park was the first (and is still the largest) protected area in the country. Its vast landscape is home to over 90 species of mammals, 334 species of bird and 120 species of butterfly. Joining a safari drive is one of the best ways to take in this national park – where you might spot elephant, buffalo and antelope during your safari drive.

Kakum National Park, which lies further south near the Cape Coast, is best explored by its network of suspension bridges which stretch in-between and above the treetops. Some of these toweringly tall trees date back hundreds of years! Colobus monkeys and the North Africa crested porcupine are just some of the species that reside here – and given your bird’s-eye view, there’s a decent chance of spotting even more wildlife, too!

3. Beaches

Ghana travel highlights extend beyond bustling cities and wondrous wildlife. Stroll along the golden-sand beaches overlooking the Gulf of Guinea, an inlet of water that stretches out into the Atlantic Ocean. On our Best of Ghana tour, you can also enjoy an evening river cruise along the Volta River in northeastern Ghana, where the tropical rainforest meets the waters. The Volta region is home to various birdlife including Northern Red Bishop, Wattled Lapwing and Black-crowned Night Heron.

4. History

Our Ghana adventure tour will see you find out more about the country’s history. Elmina Castle and Cape Coast Castle form part of the well-known Gold Coast Castles. These 15th- and 17th-century structures were built by European colonisers during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade; today, they operate as historical museums, serving as important reminders of Ghana’s long, significant past. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit the poignant Gate of No Return.

5. Art

Simply put, there’s no missing Accra – it’s one of the best places to visit on a holiday to Ghana. Accra is well-known as the art capital of the country, with colourful creativity in abundance. Check out local art galleries, abstract wall murals and interpretative sculptures to gain a fascinating insight into the country’s past and present.

6. Festivals

The Akwasidae Festival is celebrated in Ghana on certain days of each year, in accordance with the Ashanti calendar. Special celebrations take place at the Royal Palace in Kumasi, and some of our departure dates coincide with this traditional ceremony. You’ll witness the Ashanti King adorned in vivid cloth and ornate historic jewellery as he sits beneath a colourful umbrella, surrounded by Ashanti elders and advisors. The ceremony welcomes symbols of power, sword and knife bearers, carriers of beautiful ostrich feathers, and you’ll be transfixed by the drummers and trumpeters, storytellers and dancers. The mother queen also joins the ceremony, accompanied by her attendants.

Ghana: Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Ghana?
The best time to visit Ghana is between October to April. This marks Ghana’s dry season, when the humidity levels are lower, making for a more comfortable experience. With little rainfall during these months, the roads are much easier to navigate – and with a higher chance of seeing wildlife gathered around watering holes, too.

What is the food and drink like in Ghana?
Simple but flavoursome, Ghanaian cuisine mostly consists of stews with boiled yams or rice. Some of the most common dishes to try in Ghana include jollof rice, a pot dish of rice cooked with tomato sauce and served with meat or fish; it’s a national (and affordable) favourite. Throughout Accra you’ll find waakye, a combination of beans and rice served with a variety of sides.

Another traditional Ghanaian dish is red-red, which is a good choice for vegetarians. Fufu is a staple food across West Africa – Ghana has its own variation, and in northern Ghana it’s made with yam instead of boiled cassava and plantain. Tilapia, a common fish in Ghana, is often grilled and served with banku, which is a mix of fermented corn and cassava dough, hot pepper, diced tomatoes and onions.

Ghana travel advice
Ghanaians typically dress more conservatively than Western cultures, and in rural areas it’s respectful to cover your shoulders and knees. While English is the official language of Ghana, there are over 50 indigenous languages – Akan is the most common. Cedi is the official currency in Ghana and you’ll find ATM machines in Accra, Cape Coast and Kumasi. Read more about our travel safety and insurance advice here.
