What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

We visited Yaxchilan, a remote Mayan site only accessible by boat, towards the end of the afternoon.  The site was deserted.  The last party was just leaving as we arrived.  The site is in the rainforest and not completely restored.  The howler monkeys were very noisy and the spider monkeys leaping from tree to tree as the late afternoon sun backlit the fantastic roofcomb.  It was an experience I will never forget.

Our Tour Leader, Ana, impressed us on our first day when she took us to see the Diego Rivera murals and could talk through the meaning of each section.  Then when we went to the Anthropology Museum the same afternoon and she inspired us with her knowledge of the ancient civilisations we were hooked, even though we couldn't keep pace with the names of all the Gods!

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Go on this tour if you want to learn as much as possible about the ancient Mexican civilisations and to explore their fantastic cities, particularly if you are active enough to climb the pyramids  and scramble over the ruins (where that is allowed). But also be prepared for other very different activities such as swimming in a freshwater lake and experiencing the best snorkelling ever on the barrier reef off Belize.  This tour provides a wonderful combination of history, culture, wildlife and action.

Do you have anything else to add?

The Mexican people are delightful.  We stayed in hotels where the staff could not have been more helpful and all our drivers were excellent. We also never felt less than totally safe.

Be prepared for long days traveling, though it is worthwhile.  If at all a little shaky - take walking poles, I wish I had.  The pyramids are very steep without any support to climb and descend.

"I have already written a review, but forgot to say something which I think is important.

I got separated from the group, my own fault, but why do you ask for our mobile number, surely we should have our leader's number or at least the hotel we are staying at.  I experienced a very distressing time but had I had my leader's number it would have saved me an unpleasant experience."

Where do I start ? Archaeological sites, local culture, beautiful landscapes, amazing wildlife (with the help of a field guide I, confidently, identified fifty eight bird species - only four of which I had seen before) - just a few of the things included on this amazingly varied trip. It's very difficult to pick a highlight but, if forced to do so, I would say that snorkelling with two manatees on a reef off Caye Caulker (Belize) would take the prize.

If you are thinking of doing this trip, don't miss the extension - it's well worth it.  Ana was an extremely knowledgeable guide who accompanied us throughout the tour. She ensured that the interests of different members of the group were addressed and her flexible approach ensured that we missed nothing. Over two thousand photographs provide prompts to memories that will last forever. A wonderful trip which I would highly recommend. (MXY -23rd July 2011)
