What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

Getting to the top of Mount Kinabalu - it was stunning.  We had torrential rain walking up and the jungle that surrounded us was amazing in the wet. Getting to basecamp and being greated by huge mugs of hot chocolate was just just perfect.  The following morning we left at 3am and started walking in the pitch black, but it was probabily just as well it was dark, the rope access was a real adventure.  We got to the summit for sunrise and we were above the cloud line, you could see for miles.  The views made the walk so worth while and our guide through we had such good views as a result of the rain the day before, so I'm actually quite glad it rained afterall!

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

Our leader was a real charactor, born and bread in Sabah he really new his stuff and clearly loved his country.  His stories of his experince growing up in a long house really made the experince of staying in one come to life.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

"Take an umbrella and a waterproof poncho!
Be prepared to be suprised, Borneo was such a diverse country, more developed in some ways than I ever imagined, yet managing to maintain its history and the beauty of the wild landscapes and jungles. "

Do you have anything else to add?

When you  think about Borneo, think about more than just the Orang-utans, it was such an amazing country and I'm so glad I got to visit it.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

The tour was varied and packed with great experiences. The highlights for me were the amount of, and variety of wildlife that we saw, the caves at Mulu and the 'bat exodus' from Deer Cave which happens every evening unless it's raining.  I thoroughly enjoyed the couple of days that we spent with the Iban people at the Longhouse on the Lemenak River (it's a shame that this is not included in 2013 itineraries). I prefered Sarawak to Sabah as it felt more 'off the beaten track'.

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

Bobby was a good tour leader.  He coped admirably when one of our internal flights was cancelled (the flight out of Mulu) and the next day's internal flights and that night's accommodation had to be re-arranged.  The itinerary was not disrupted at all by this and we still managed to 'catch up' on everything - despite losing a day.

Be prepared for any eventuality (see above comment re: flights). Also, pack plenty of plastic bags - there are a lot of boat trips and also the potential for tropical downpours! I found it useful to have my camera in a fully submersible waterproof bag which you can get from diving shops. A decent poncho is also worthwhile (keeps you dryer than a jacket). Also, don't forget your swimming costume as there are a few great opportunities to swim in the sea and in natural pools and waterfalls.

I didn't make it to the summit of Kinabalu (which was going to be one of my trip highlights) but it didn't matter - the scenery on the walk to Laban Rata more than made up for this.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

The wildlife was extrememely good, Dominic our guide was very knowledgeable as he had been a game park guide before taking on Explore trips. The best experience was a 2 hour river trip at Bilit (Sukau area) where we saw:- Sunbirds, Intermediate and Great Egrets, White Bellied Sea Eagle, Stork Billed and Collared Kingfisher, Pied Hornbill, Silver  Monkeys, Proboscis Monkeys, Macaques, Oran Utan, Crocodile, Monitor Lizard and a group of Pigmy Borneo Elephants in the river and then on land. Kinabalu was a great experience, and to a snorkelling novice the sea at Manukan Island memorable for the fish. The Sports Massage at the Beringgis Beach Hotel Spa was very good for the recovering legs

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

Dominic was very good, a candidate for leader of the year. Knowledgeable, spotted wildlife that others did not see, cheerful, smiling, a real gem. Well organised, the arrangements ran like clockwork; even upgraded accomadation on two sites.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Do not worry if you do not reach the top of Kinabalu. I turned back after Laban Rata before the rope way to the top but it was still a memorable experience; my wife made it all the way and we have some stunning pictures. It is not guaranteed to be able to get to the top anyway, 2 days before our group no-one was allowed beyond Laban Rata as the wind was over 80kph and the day before only some were let through the upper gate before the guides closed it due to rain. I used two walking poles and the knees held up fine, 5 hours to Laban Rata , 3&3/4 hours down.

Do you have anything else to add?

Unfortunately due to cancellations, our group was small. There were 3 of us initially and a 4th joined at Kota Kinabalu. While it made it almost a private tour I did miss the joy of meeting talking and walking with more people. A really good trip though.
