What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

Opening the curtains of my hotel room to see, beyond the golden statues beneath my veranda, a golden pagoda on the far side of the lake at Taungoo, while Buddhist chanting echoed across the water.

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

Absolutely excellent:  very experienced, patient, willing to impart knowledge and a lovely sense of humour.  Fattening though they were, her constant supply of snacks for us all was much appreciated.  Couldn't be bettered.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Don't worry too much about travelling light:  someone is always on hand to carry your suitcase for you.  Be prepared to be ill:  most of us went down with a stomach complaint at some point.  Take spare memory cards for your camera:  everywhere you look, a fresh photo opportunity presents itself.  Investigate the flight times:  do you really want an 8-hour wait at KL, or can you find something more convenient yourself?  It's worth doing the beach extension, despite the long drive there and back:  sightseeing in Myanmar is surprisingly tiring - I am not a beach person, but welcomed a couple of days of doing nothing.

Do you have anything else to add?

Go to Myanmar soon:  it's developing rapidly, and tourists like us are accelerating the pace of change.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

"There were numerous highlights of this tour to Myanmar. Most of the temples were quite stunning. The local people feel that old things are unlucky so like to show you preserved temples and stupas. Some of them were very impressive but my favourite area was Bagan and the old ""red brick"" temples.
There was a great deal of travel by boat which was a very relaxing way to view the country. The two days spent at Inle Lake were the best water based days.Everything from the leg rowers to the fishermen and the floating gardens were all a sight to behold.
The days on the beach at the end were the perfect way to relax and review all that you had seen."

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

"Our tour leader ws San Yu. The tour was perfectly organised with all modes of transport perfectly co-ordinated.
I would not rate San Yu as the best tour leader that I had ever travelled with but he had the unique advantage of an interesting family history and being a personal friend of Aung San Sun Kyi. I am afraid that we almost interrogated the poor man about his life."

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

"There were a lot of temples and they came thick and fast in the first third of the trip. I realise that this is a logistical problem but it would have been nice to know that there would be a respite from mass temple gazing in the latter stages of the trip.

Do not expect Myanmar to be a culinary delight. Although the food was invariably good, fresh and well prepared, the tastes were not as exciting as Thailand/Vietnam for example"

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

Although this tour visits areas not otherwise covered by other Explore trips the highlights for us were still the almost magical atmosphere surrounding the temples of Began and being whisked around the sites of Inlay Lake in long-tailed mud skiffs. I should too mention the beach extension, we particularly sought, which on this trip visited Sunny Paradise Resort at Ngwe Saung. It was idyllic and well worth the interesting five hour drive across the Irrawaddy delta.

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

Nyi Nyi Kyaw had the task of conducting a group of 18 around his country. No mean task. By planning breaks with pre-ordered, set or buffet meals there was very little confusion or time lost which might otherwise occur with a group of this size. I think everyone felt he dealt well with individual issues too. Not only an experienced guide but a man with life experiences to enable him to talk knowledgably of Buddhism and of his country.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Day temperatures rose well into the 30’s and it was very humid at times, heed warnings as to sunhat, sunscreen etc. However, we did not find the nights or heights as cold as predicted. We used Explore’s local costs chart to estimate spending but returned with a decent sum towards our next trip. We found single dish meals more than adequate and hotels etc. were generous with complimentary water. Drink as much water as you can but still expect a touch of the Traveller’s, most of our group suffered at some time.

Do you have anything else to add?

With Burma/Myanmar being a popular destination we were in the largest group(18) we have ever traveled with and found the dynamics more akin to those of a coach party rather than small group travel. Fortunately some day trips were based on local transport when, divided of necessity, we were less obtrusive and able to relate more to the local community.
