Detailed Trip Notes

Suitability

Suitability

We've given each of our tours a comfort rating and a tour pace, walking or cycling grade to give you a general idea about the level of activity on each tour and the standard of accommodation you will be staying in at the end of your day's adventure.

Often you'll stay in different styles of accommodation during your tour; so we make an average rating across the entire tour.  For more information on where you'll stay each night, please refer to the day by day tour itinerary.

Tipping

Tour Leader: At your discretion you might also consider tipping your Tour Leader in appreciation of the efficiency and service you receive.

Local Crew: Although entirely voluntary, tipping is a recognized part of life in this region of the world. Some local staff will look to members of the group for personal recognition of particular services provided. In order to make things easier for you, the Tour Leaders may organise a group’s tips kitty and if this is the case, they will account for it throughout the tour.

Local Staff: Accordingly please allow approximately £20 for tips.

Foreign Exchange

Foreign Exchange Local Currency: Uzbekistani Sum.

Recommended Currency for Exchange: Take your spending money in US$ cash, as many bars and shops only accept hard currency (and often lack the facility to change travellers cheques). We recommend you take new (post 1990), good condition dollar bills in small denominations.

Where to Exchange: Most major towns - yourTour Leader will advise you on arrival.

Credit Card Acceptance: Not available.

ATMs: Limited. Do not rely on these as they often run out of money, it is best to bring cash.

Travellers Cheques: Exchange is not available.

Additional Information: Remember to keep your currency declaration form – it will be required when you leave.

Visa Requirements

Visas are required for all nationalities for Uzbekistan.

Some nationalities (not UK citizens) may be required to provide an authorisation letter from the Uzbek authorities in support of their visa application. Please contact your nearest embassy to check the requirements.  If you require an authorisation letter please contact Explore immediately.

For your own convenience we recommend that visas applied for in the UK by UK citizens are processed through Explore’s recommended visa service, Visa Swift. In the past the UK embassy has refused to accept individual applications.

All visa information is subject to change. You should confirm all visa related issues with the relevant Embassy prior to departure.

Packing for your tour

To assist with packing for your tour, we have detailed some of the essential items you should take with you.

Luggage

Unfortunately it does occasionally happen that luggage does not always reach its destination on the same flight as its owner, or possibly it may be damaged in transit. If you are unlucky enough for this to occur, it is important that you file a PIR (Property Irregularity Report) with the airline before leaving the airport. This is essential when you come to make a claim either against the airline or from your travel insurance company

One main piece of baggage and a daysac will be needed as you will not have access to your main luggage during the overnight Yurt stay. Total allowance: 44lbs/20kgs.

Trek Kit Bag

Clothing

Light-weight cottons are most suitable for the hot summers of Central Asia. For early or late season tours warmer clothes will be required. Tight fitting garments should be avoided. The region is predominantly Moslem, so brief shorts and skirts or clothes that are too revealing offend local sensibilities. Dress with respect. Bring swimming gear for Lake Aydarkul.

Footwear

Good quality, comfortable shoes/trainers and sandals.

Equipment

Bring sunscreen, a sunhat, water bottle and torch for the Yurt camp.
