Discovery Tour In Thailand & Cambodia With Jungle Raft House Stay
Chiang Mai & Rice Barge Cruise
In Bangkok, we plan to visit the Grand Palace and temples of the Emerald Buddha and Wat Po ,then take a night train to the northern city of Chiang Mai. A highlight of this pleasantly cool place will be climbing the 'Dragon Steps' to the hilltop monastery of Doi Suthep. The breathtaking complex of ancient temples and palaces at Si Satchanalai and Sukhothai are also along our route. We then board our rice barge and spend the day cruising along the Chao Phraya - a slow river journey past a medley of isolated villages and jungled landscapes.
River Kwai & 'Death Railway'
After exploring the 600-year-old ruins of Ayutthaya, we drive to Kanchanaburi and the 'Bridge over the River Kwai'. We then board the train to Nam Tok (along the infamous 'Railway of Death'), before taking a longtail boat up the Kwai Noi river and into the jungle. Here, we stay in raft houses and have time to walk to a nearby Mon village, ride elephants, and enjoy some bamboo rafting.
Phnom Penh & Fabled Temples
We fly to the fascinating city of Phnom Penh where we visit the National Museum of Arts and Royal Palace, as well as spending time at the horrifying Tuol Sleng Museum and The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek - stark reminders of the country's more recent unsettled history. We journey overland to Siem Reap, our base for the discovery and exploration of the vast ruins of the fabled royal city of Angkor, lost and forgotten for over 500 years in the Cambodian jungle. Some 150 square kilometres are scattered with walled cities and magnificent stone temples, sculptures, reservoirs and causeways, built between the 9th and 13th centuries. We also take an excursion to nearby Tonle Sap Lake for a boat trip to the floating villages of Chong Kneas.
