Hiking holidays around Barcelona can lead to the Pyrenees

People planning adventure holidays to Barcelona may be interested to know that the city was voted one of the best areas in the world for walking holidays.

Mark Broadhead, who works in Lonely Planet's Melbourne offices, wrote on the firm's website about the poll taken by the travel guide company.

He said: "One of the best ways to get to know a place is one of the easiest - just walk around it. So we asked you: What are your favourite cities to walk around?"

If travellers want to go on a bit of a more extensive and intensive hiking holiday in the area, they may wish to walk around the Pyrenees, the mountain range with Catalonia down one side of it.

There is so much to see in these mountains: even just one of the national parks in the Pyrenees - Aigues Tortes - has over one hundred lakes in it.

In all, readers of Lonely Planet guides voted for 186 different destinations, with other popular destinations including Istanbul, Buenos Aires and Singapore.
