Cappadocia is historically 'remarkable' as well as naturally beautiful

Cappadocia is a perfect destination for people planning adventure holidays as, according to travel expert James Bainbridge, the Turkish region is "remarkable".

The writer, who has previously written travel guidebooks for the region and for Turkey in general, said that although the famous fairy chimneys are interesting, the history of the area is just as much so.

Early people who lived in the area cut their homes into the rock by making caves, which were later used as churches in Byzantine times.

"The area's most extraordinary phase was during the medieval era, when the valleys were a refuge for Byzantine Christians," he said on Lonely Planet's website.

"Religious troglodytes established monastic settlements, and their cave churches add a biblical solemnity to the Flintstones-like region."

People visiting Cappadocia for reasons of historical interest may also wish to visit the Goreme Open Air Museum, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
