Solo holidays in Budapest are 'tranquil and majestic'

Visit the traditional coffee houses and public baths, says writer

People planning solo holidays should consider travelling to the "romantic, tranquil and majestic" Hungarian capital city of Budapest.

According to Fiona Duncan, writing in the Daily Telegraph, the region offers the same sort of hybrid of east and west as cities which straddle Europe and Asia, such as Istanbul.

Budapest contains two distinct regions, named Buda and Pest. Buda is on the right-bank of the famous river Danube, while Pest is located on the left-bank.

The writer recommends the city for its fantastic history - the parliament square "still peppered with bullet holes" - alongside the coffee shops and baths.

"In 1948 the Communists closed every coffee house in the city, but a few originals still exist, such as Gerbeaud, New York, Central Muvesz (all in Pest) and Ruzwurm (Buda)," she writes.

Travellers on solo holidays in Budapest could take a trip to the nearby cities of Krakow, Budapest, Bratislava and Vienna to extend their trip.
