South Africa's annual sardine run is a 'unique' attraction

People planning to take an adventure holiday to South Africa may like to take a trip to the coast to see an amazing animal migration take place.

The country's tourism board revealed that the sardine migration takes place in the waters just off of south coast Kwazulu-Natal region.

Lebohang Mokhesi, the manager for South African Tourism in the United Kingdom, noted that the event was a "unique and unexplained phenomenon which causes a frenzy of excitement amongst everyone and everything that comes into contact with [it]".

She added: "It really is an out of this world sight - picture thousands of birds darting from the sky, feeding on the fish, with hundreds of species of sharks all feasting on the other fish."

The famous sardine run occurs when the fish makes its way from the cooling waters around South Africa up along the continent's coast. It was covered by naturalist David Attenborough in an episode of his recent BBC television series, Nature's Great Events.
